Retrofitting a headquarters for a new era

After more than a decade, TotalEnergies’ long-standing Redhill office had become dated and no longer reflected the organisation’s dynamic, forward-looking character. They sought a new workplace that would project their brand, reinforce their culture, and support the way their teams work today and in the future.

They appointed Woodalls to lead the relocation to their Kingswood Campus in Surrey to deliver a more modern environment that could better support their teams and showcase their refreshed brand identity.

The layout did not fully align with their workflows, and it lacked the brand expression and cultural resonance essential to their vision. We were tasked with retrofitting and transforming this environment into a workplace that felt distinctly and unmistakably TotalEnergies, all while minimising waste, working within tight budgetary constraints, and delivering to an ambitious timeline.

The new headquarters spans two buildings:

  • Kingswood Place (ground and first floors)

  • Beachgate (first floor)

We began by redesigning the flow and functionality of the space adding variety and flexibility in settings demanded by the TotalEnergies global team. We introduced neighbourhoods to cluster departments, ensuring equitable access to offices, meeting rooms, and amenities. This was complemented by a richer mix of environments including collaborative zones, informal breakout spaces, quiet focus rooms, sit–stand desks, a range of meeting areas for smaller groups and enhanced boardroom and training facilities.

At Beachgate we developed a destination floor for the campus, somewhere for the team and clients to enjoy. This dynamic and vibrant space is anchored by the ‘Bonjour Café’ which is a vibrant social hub supported by a games room, high-spec AV meeting rooms, and a flexible training space.

Brand integration was central to the transformation. Working closely with TotalEnergies, we embedded their visual identity throughout the new workplace infusing bold colour palettes, branded wayfinding elements and bespoke immersive full-height graphic walls aligned to their brand. Every area now reflects their story and values.

Alongside this work, sustainable design practices underpinned the project with approximately 60% of existing furniture reused, reconfigured, and relocated to reduce waste and control costs without compromising quality. In larger meeting rooms, we enhanced acoustics with targeted upgrades rather than major replacements and as much as possible we designed within the existing HVAC and infrastructure of the building.

The 50,000sqm project moved at pace commencing in September with completion scheduled for May 2025 requiring precise planning, close collaboration, and a focus on adaptability. Today TotalEnergies’ new workplace campus is more than a retrofit; it is a strategic redefinition of the workplace, balancing functionality with brand expression, efficiency with inspiration.
